8 Effective Home Remedies for Cold

A blocked nose can give you sleepless nights and a running nose can worsen your condition further. While you may be taking medicines prescribed by your physician to fight this condition, a few home remedies for cold mentioned here may help come handy too.

Warm Fluids

Drink warm water at regular intervals throughout the day to cure cold. You may add a few drops of lemon and honey to make it more effective. Consuming plentiful water keeps your body hydrated and drains out the infection.

Ginger tea can work wonders to tackle your running nose. Adding a few tulsi leaves in the preparation helps in speeding up the recovery process.

Warm chicken soup not only helps in clearing your sinus, but also gives the required nourishment to your body. Those of you who are bored of consuming chicken, then garlic soup is another alternative as garlic has strong antibacterial properties that help fight against cold and flu.

Add a dash of turmeric as you boil a glass of milk. Consuming turmeric milk twice a day shall too help soothe running nose.

Flaxseeds

Boil flaxseeds in water to make a thick mixture. Mix few drops of honey and lemon in it and consume it to get relief from cold.

Ginger

Cut ginger into small pieces and sprinkle some salt on it. Chew these pieces to heal cold. Ginger root contains anti-inflammatory shaogals and gingerols that fight away the rhinoviruses which are the main cause of cold. Consume this mixture two or three times a day and see the difference for yourself.

Lemon, honey and cinnamon syrup

A combination of lemon, honey and cinnamon helps in fighting the common cold. It works equally well for kids as well as adults. The procedure of preparing the syrup is simple. Take half a pan of honey and boil it until it gets thin. Then add a dash of cinnamon and lemon. Have a spoon full of this syrup two or three times a day for relief.

Inhale Steam

Inhaling steam is one of the simplest home remedy to ease blocked nose. Hold your head at a safe distance over a bowl of boiling hot water. Cover your head with a towel in a way that you only get to inhale the steam and not the fresh air around. Inhale the steam for 1 or 2 minutes. If you feel uncomfortable at any time during the process then remove the towel for a while and inhale the steam through your mouth. Repeat the mentioned procedure after a few seconds. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil, rosemary or tea tree oil for a more soothing effect.

Steam inhalation for cold treatment

Mustard Oil

Applying mustard oil on chest, back and feet helps in fighting cold. Inhaling its strong aroma also helps in curing this condition. To make it more effective heat the oil and add some minced garlic to it.

Steamy Shower

It is suggested to take a hot water bath or a steamy shower in this condition as it helps in moistening your nasal passage thereby offering relief.

Adequate Rest

It is essential to stay warm and take proper rest when you catch cold. Your body requires time and energy to fight against the virus and this isn’t possible if you waste your energy on other tasks. So take a blanket and have a sound sleep while your body builds the energy to eliminate the cold virus.
