Besani Aloo Tikki – Potato bites with gram flour

During rainy seasons, having pakoras and tea is heavenly. However, here is a new recipe which will beat your pakoras twice.

This recipe is filled with potatoes but mashed once, so you have all the independence of adding your flavors of filling to go with potatoes be it cottage cheese (paneer) or any vegetables.

Ingredients

For the Batter

  • 1 cup Besan Gram flour
  • 1 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste

For the Mixture-

  • 2 large potatoes boiled and mashed
  • 2 green chillies finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1/2 inch ginger grated
  • 7 to 8 curry leaves
  • 1 tablespoon green coriander leaves chopped
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Besan Batter

  1. Take the besan in a bowl.
  2. Add salt and 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder.
  3. Add water and make a thick paste-batter
  4. Boil and mash the potatoes
  5. Add salt, 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder, chopped green chillies, garam masala, grated ginger, curry leaves and green coriander leaves.
  6. Make small balls by rolling in your palms
  7. Heat oil for deep frying in a pan.
  8. Dip each ball in the besan batter and coat nicely.
  9. Deep fry till only half cooked. The colour should be light yellow only.
  10. Drain in a sieve and set aside for sometime.
  11. Now, slightly flatten each ball and deep fry again, on low flame. Fry this time till the colour is golden brown and corners are crunchy
  12. Remove on tissue paper so that excess oil is extracted.
  13. Serve with Pav and mint-tamarind chutney.
