Shree 420 (1955)

Shree 420, starring Raj Kapoor and Nargis, is one among the best Hindi movies of Raj Kapoor. This movie grossed 20 million INR in that era. The story is about a poor fellow who gets trapped by a cunning businessman who uses him for his immoral and illegal activities. Upon realizing, that he has been cheated by the businessman, he sets everything straight and gets the culprits punished.

Despite of being old, its songs are evergreen and still hummed by the music lovers which includes – ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’, ‘Ichak Dana’, ‘Pyar Hua Ikraar Hua Hai’ and ‘Mera Joota Hai Japani’.

Mother India (1957)

One of the many masterpieces of Nargis, Mother India, is the story about a poor woman living in a village who raises her children despite of all the adversities in her life. Not only humans, but nature too had been cruel to her when her house gets washed away by flood in the village.

This epic movie is one of the saddest movies produced by the industry which will make your tear roll every time you watch it. Mother India is the most watched movie till date and it won several major awards.

Pyaasa (1957)

This timeless classic movie, featuring Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman, still remains popular and favorite. The story revolves around a poet, who is still struggling to get a recognition. He meets a prostitute who is good at heart and she helps him to achieve his dreams by getting his poems published.

Mughal-E-Azam (1960)

Nothing compares to the grandeur of this film as it swept all the major awards. Starring Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, the story takes us back in the Mughal era in which an emperor’s son, Salim, falls in love with a courtesan, Anarkali. Salim wags a hopeless war against his father as he is determined to be with his love.

The movie is still popular for its amazing sound tracks and unforgettable dialogues. Madhubala is still remembered as one of the most beautiful actresses in the film industry.

Guide (1965)

Guide is a tragic love story based on R.K Narayan’s novel ‘The Guide’. The story is about a tourist guide, Dev Anand, who falls in love with an unhappy married woman, Waheeda Rehman. He sacrifices everything to help her achieve her dreams, but he doesn’t get appreciation in return which leaves him devastated. Because of forgery case, he is sent to jail and upon release he wanders here and there in search of food and shelter. Upon reaching a village, he is taken as a saint who will bring good fortune to them and is forced to sacrifice his life to bring rain in the village.

Backed up with S.D Burman’s evergreen melodies, this classic movie was a super hit. Moreover, melodies by Lata and Rafi were also a reason enough to make this movie a popular hit.

Mera Naam Joker (1970)

Mera Naam Joker is one of the most touching movie ever in the Industry. Raju has always faced disappointments in matters of heart since his childhood. His failed love affairs gave us a lesson for life “The Show Must Go On”. Despite of being sad and unhappy he chooses to cheer his audiences by being a clown.

Bobby (1973)

Bobby, starring Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, is one of the most popular romantic movies of all time. Raju, Rishi Kapoor, an 18-year-old son of a rich businessman is deeply in love with a 16-year-old Bobby, granddaughter of Raju’s nanny. The story is about the intense love between the young couple and their parents who are not ready for their marriage because of the difference between the financial status of both the families.

Deewar (1975)

Focussing on the tumultuous politics in 1970, this film by Yash Chopra received the Filmfare Best Movie Award. The plot of the story is about two impoverished brothers Vijay and Ravi. Vijay, Amitabh Bachchan, who is haunted by his past, turns to crime. On the other hand, his brother Ravi, Shashi Kapoor, becomes an honest cop. Fortune makes them stand in front of each other as a cop and a baddie.

This blockbuster was ranked 4th highest grossing Bollywood film of 1975 and is ranked as one of the top 25 must see movies.

Namak Halaal (1982)

This golden jubilee hit was not new to Bachchan as he was the unbeatable superstar in his era. The plot of the movie is about reconciling of the estranged son (Amitabh Bachchan) and mother (Waheeda Rehman); and their loyalty towards protecting Raja Kumar (Shashi Kapoor) in a financial conflict with his cousin.

Namak Halaal became Blockbuster at the box office and was remade in Telugu and Tamil. The movie was again a huge hit in both Telugu (as Bhale Ramudu) and Tamil (as Velaikaran).

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994)

Hum Aapke Hain Kaun is one among the best Bollywood movies which is repeatedly watched by Indians all over the world. This movie represents the rich values and traditions of Indian culture. India Abroad captioned it as “cloyingly familial and touchingly sad melodrama replete with typical Indian social situations”. The movie is all about family relationships and there are no villains, or battles between good or bad. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)

Gaddar, starring Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel, reminds us of the tragic partition of India-Pakistan in 1947 subsequent Hindu-Muslim riots. The story is about a Sikh driver who falls in love with a Muslim girl from an aristocratic family during the riots and how their love triumphs against all odds.

The avatar of Sunny Deol as a Sikh driver was immensely liked by people, especially in North India and the film was nominated for various awards in Bollywood.

3 Idiots (2009)

3 Idiots is an eye-opening movie for both the parents and the students as it gives a lot of messages in the Indian education system. There is an alarming rise in the suicidal cases among students because of the pressure they are facing either at home or in school. The movie is about the story of three friends – Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, and Sharman Joshi -studying in one of the best engineering colleges and their professional lives. Most of the students can easily connect with the lives of these friends.
