Vazhakkai Podi | Raw Banana Powder

This is a very traditional recipe of Tamil Nadu, almost forgotten. Very simple recipe, this podi tastes great with steamed rice and til oil. It can also be used as accompaniment to curd rice.

Ingredients

  • 1 Raw Banana
  • 4 tbsp Tuvar Dal (arhar)
  • 1 small piece Asafoetida
  • 1 sprig Curry Leaves
  • 1 tsp Chilli Powder
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tbsp Til Oil
  • 1 small piece Tamarind
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Roast the raw banana on flame or boil it in a pressure cooker.
  2. Let it cool, peel the skin and cut into small pieces.

  3. Heat a pan with 1 tsp oil. Add asafoetida, tuvar dal, curry leaves, chili powder. Fry until the dal turns golden. Now add 1 tsp mustard seeds. When they splutter, switch off.

  4. After it is cooled, blend in a mixer.

  5. Now add the raw banana pieces from step 2, salt and tamarind and blend it again.

  6. In case the mixture looks very dry, add 1 tsp of til oil and grind it.

  7. Vazhaika podi is ready. Serve it with hot rice and til oil.
