What Is Liposuction? Advantages And Risks

For those who have been on extremely obese side and have tried every trick in the ‘weight loss’ book,  may have also considered liposuction as an option.  Here is what all you should know about liposuction.

What is Liposuction?

what-is-liposuction

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery, where  excess fat is ‘sucked out’ from different parts of the body, especially, abdomen, thighs, back, buttocks and others. This is a surgical procedure, where small and thin tubes, known as cannula are inserted into the body part, from where unwanted fat needs to be removed. Then, the fat under the skin is sucked using a high pressure vacuum at the other end, when the tubes are pulled. Liposuction, generally happens over a small portion or area of the body at a time. Liposuction is done when lifestyle changes like diet and exercise fails to reduce the body weight.

When we gain weight, the fat cells in our body increases. Liposuction is a way to reduce the number of fat cells from a specific area in the body. However, it should not be taken as a treatment of obesity. Post Liposuction, it is important to maintain a strict diet and exercise regime for sustained results. The results of Liposuction cannot be assessed right away as the area will still be inflamed. Liposuction should not be done if you want to get rid of stretch marks or other skin irregularities. Liposuction is a very important decision and should be discussed and thought over properly. It is not a mechanism for weight loss, so it should not be treated as one, else you will be highly disappointed.

A local anesthesia is applied to the area where the procedure will take place. Then, a large amount of anesthetic liquid is injected into the fatty tissue before sucking out the fat from there.

Ultrasound-assisted Liposuction

Ultrasound is used to liquefy the fat below the skin, which makes it easier to remove. This procedure is mainly done on the abdomen or sides.

Other than removal of fat, there are certain conditions, which can be treated by Liposuction such as:

Lymphedema: Here, lymph or fluid accumulates in the tissues, causing swelling, especially in arms and legs. Liposuction can alleviate the pain and discomfort to a certain extent.

Gynecomastia: This is the accumulation of fat under the nipple on a man’s body, which can be removed by Liposuction.

Treating Abnormalities: Liposuction can be used to correct abnormalities after weight-loss surgery, which might lead to excess skin and others.

Lipomas: Liposuction can be used to treat fatty tumors.

Lipodystrophy: It can also be used to treat metabolism of fat in the body.

Axillary Hyperhidrosis: Liposuction is used to cure excessive sweating of the armpit.

It can also be used for cosmetic changes like breast reduction and face lift in the body.

Risks Associated with Liposuction

There are certain risks of Liposuction, which needs to be taken into account:

  • There is a restriction on the amount of fat that can be removed from the body. If too much fat is removed, it leads to loss of body fat and blood pressure might drop
  • A proper sedation, either local or general is required, as the process can turn out to be very painful
  • People with good skin tone and elasticity should opt for Liposuction, else the skin might sag in the area where the procedure is done. Hence, it is recommended for only women under 40. If too much fat is removed from an area, it can lead or ridges or wrinkles in the skin
  • If you tend to gain weight after the procedure, it might affect an area, where the problem did not exist earlier.
  • Temporary swelling or irritation or even severe infection can happen in the area where the cannules are inserted.
  • Liposuction affects the blood vessels and excessive blood loss can happen. This can also lead to blood clots, which can be life threatening
  • An insertion can also damage certain abdominal organs like the spleen.
  • People suffering from heart problems, diabetes or artery diseases are at a higher risk during this procedure. Even, people who are excessively obese have a higher risk in this process. They should rather opt for Bariatric Surgery, which suits their case.

Hence, it should be done after a lot of deliberation and consultation from proper experts at the right places.
